I do believe that he was acting young and naive. He didn't realize his trusted "mentor" was actually a snake in the grass that would pass along every bit of detail shared/consulted with about his defense to his direct blood.
However, Dallin is not only blood, but described as Sam's "personal assistant" in all things related to football and would do anything to help him out. ANYTHING! And in Sam's film study (accompanied by his personal assistant in all things football-related), he found a "key strategy that worked for him", but of course, he wasn't going to share what that was.
To me Crew was used as a pawn. Young, trusting, and yet ignorant pawn.
