One thing I'd like to know ever since having first learned of this free kick
nonsense back in high school (approaching 30 years ago):

Why was it ever made a rule? I mean, seriously, just what was the purpose when the group of people (who are probably all dead by now) who sat around and devised this rule?

"Hey, you know what we need? We need a rule that lets us kick the ball right back off again if and only if we fair catch a punt. But on this kickoff, you can get 3 pts if it goes thru the uprights. Cause what if one team is tired of playing offense and only wants to play defense? Shouldn't they have a way of giving the ball right back to the other team without being charged with a turnover?"
