Yes, BYU has to trim their roster, but the casualties are going to be mostly guys who don't even show up
on the depth chart.
BYU currently has 122 players on roster. The current scholarship limit is 85, so there are roughly 40 players who are on the roster who are not on scholarship. Next year the scholarship limit increases by 20 to 105. 105 is also the hard cap on the roster.
There were 68 unique players on the depth chart for the Houston game. This includes special teams players (K/P/LS etc). Some of the positions on the depth chart go 5 or 6 deep, so the depth chart really is includes all the serviceable players who have a reasonable chance to get at least one rep in a game. Here's the count on how many players at each position show up on the depth chart:
OFFENSE
QB -2
RB-6
WR-6
TE-4
OL-8
Total Offense: 26
DEFENSE
D-Line - 6
Ends/Edge -6
LBs - 9
Safeties - 8
CBs -7
Total Defense: 36
Specialists (not otherwise on the depth chart) - 6
Total: 68
If you go back and look at the depth chart for Southern Illinois, you can see where we've had injuries take out players or where they've dropped out of contention for playing time due to other players passing them up. Tei Nacua and Cody Epps were on the depth chart for S.Illinois, but don't show up at the end of the year. Keim got injured at RT. Jake Eichorn was listed as the backup C in week 1. Neither show up on the week 12 depth chart.
On defense, it's shockingly consistent from week 1 to week 12. There have been a couple of changes in who is listed as #2 vs #3, but all position groups other than Nickel have the same players on the depth chart from week 1 to week 12. At Nickle, Epps was the week 1 starter, and he doesn't show up at all in week 12. Chika Ebunoha is listed as the #3 in week 1 (never heard of him), and is not on the chart in week 12.
If you account for injuries, there are, at most, 75 guys who over the course of the year would reasonably expect to see playing time. So the other roughly 45-50 guys on roster are for depth/development. Ideally to fill out a 105 team roster, I think you'd want something like the following player distribution:
QB: 6
RB: 8
WR: 10
TE: 6
OL: 18
Total Offense: 48
DL: 10
DE/Edge: 10
LB: 12
CB: 10
Safety: 9
Total Defense: 51
K: 2
P: 2
LS: 2
Total Specialists: 6
To get down to 105, the biggest position group that is going to have to be cut are TEs. Here's what the current roster looks like:
QB - 6
RB - 8
WR - 15
TE - 11
OL - 20
DL - 8
DE - 12
LB - 13
CB - 9
Safety -14
K - 2
P - 2
LS - 2
We have about 10 too many WR/TEs on roster. The other big roster glut is at the safety position where we probably need to cut about 5 players. Given those facts, I don't understand why we have 3 more TEs in our 2025 recruiting class committed to BYU. We need those spots for DL and OL
