Cougarboard Coaches and the Gods of Variance
I'm not saying my opinion is any more valuable than anyone else's here. Even among former BYU players you will see some critical of certain coaches and others praising the same coach. So, experience doesn't always seem to enhance opinions.

But sometimes opinions are easier to dismiss than others.

The easiest opinions to dismiss are single-play variances. That is: a pass is called. The player is in the end zone. The throw is on target. The ball hits both hands. The ball is dropped (and no, this isn't a Darius Lassiter example).

What went wrong?

Some will say the OC can't call a TD play to save his life. Had the WR caught that perfect pass, that opinion would be null.

Some will say the QB can't make a red zone throw. Had the WR caught that perfect pass, that opinion would also be null.

And some will say that WR can't catch a cold. But perhaps he made a difficult catch on that same drive, militating against that opinion.

My only suggestion is that single plays rarely tell us much, especially in a game with 22 players on the field, human refs, plays called from a booth, etc. When heated opinions get shared here that can be explained by the variances of the game, I don't consider that post too serious, nor that poster to be a "football mind."

There are some great football minds here, though. They are the ones who sift past the single plays and look for patterns. Is there a pattern of this HC tending to have his teams unprepared for the most important games? Is there a pattern of this OC struggling to call effective plays in short yardages? Is there a pattern of this WR dropping passes? Or, is there a pattern of ALL WRs dropping passes (thereby implicating the WR coach)? Does this QB struggle at certain moments, or with certain passes (that are correctable, which may implicate the QB, or not correctable, which may implicate the OC)?

They say football is a game of inches. It's also a game of tiny moments where an inch here or there could completely change your opinion. Be smarter than that guy.

If you thought there was a point to this post, you're sorely mistaken. I've been posting here for 20 years, so you should know me by now. That's on you.
