The show did a fantastic job introducing me to a WWII player I'd never heard of before. I also really enjoyed watching Germans oppose Nazism. Seemed like a fresh perspective on Germans during that time since most movies crucify Germans together with Nazi's during, which of course is absurd. Not every German was a Nazi.

I read a review about the show which suggested that it it might be even more timely now than even 2 years ago. One of the critical messages of the movie came from Bonhoeffer's deep interaction with Harlem Baptist church, where he got to see racism firsthand. He was shocked at the cruelty and hatred he saw. But his wise black friend explained that young Bonhoeffer's eyes hadn't been opened yet to the hate that exists in all countries. He was clearly foreshadowing Germany's descent into evil, but you have to also assume it's talking about the United States. and the UK. Just like Bonhoeffer, we think our 'advanced society' is immune. It's not.

I also wasn't aware of some historical facts, including the Lutheran churches embrace and preaching of Nazism from the pulpit. ick. And then there was Hitler ordering and publishing a new Bible with two new commandments to add to the 10: "11. Honor your Fuhrer 12. Keep the blood pure and your honor holy." disgusting. They also recast Jesus as an Aryan instead of a Jew. Given their Jewish hatred, this makes sense that they would do this, but how had I not heard of any of this before? And how had churches so willingly gone along with this?

One of the more powerful scenes, which I think is shown in trailers, shows one of the massive rallies that Nazism was famous for, with an energetic speaker shouting propaganda to an enthusiastic crowd. They made the scene in black and white, and in poor resolution, like it might have appeared on TV in 1941. The difference was the Aryan speaker was speaking in English, but with all the furor and energy we see in those old nazi propaganda videos. It was eerie hearing that level of feverish support for nazism in English.

As movies go, it was a bit drawn out, I had difficulty connecting with the characters and multiple scenes were hard to follow. I'd still recommend the movie as a reminder of how close tyranny and hate are to where we are. As we stand around the fire of liberty, evil gathers around waiting for the fire to die down.
