We got fairly lucky with ASU fans immediately around us. One guy right in front of us, a few beers in, started chirping early about how overrated we were & blah blah blah. I just countered by saying I agree and that ASU is awesome and that we would be lucky to win. That deescalated anything else from him and we ended up having great interactions during the game and he ended up praising BYU during the game. I didn't want to run my mouth, just fully expected BYU to win and wanted to enjoy the game. Plus had my son with me. We were still cheering loud and everyone around us was cool with us.
A couple rows up, a few down and to the left and right was another story. They tried talking smack to us and it looked like they were giving other BYU fans near them a hard time. Immediately after that last interception, they all went nuts and it literally starting raining beer all around us. Then someone, I think from the upper deck, threw a can of beer that hit a kid a few rows down from us. Poor kid, in ASU gear, was in pain. Hope the dad let the staff know to look through video footage and hold someone accountable.
I heard no religious/soaking smack at all. Very little cursing. A couple ASU fans were saying that there was a "campaign" by ASU to not do any anti-Mormon chants and to treat the mormons well since their qb, players, some staff and a lot of their fans are LDS. Made me somewhat happy that Leavitt is there and hopefully he can have some influence on taming the fanbase. I was at the last game BYU played in Tempe, I think back in '97 and the fans were probably the worst I have ever seen and I have been to quite a few away games.
So was overall pleasantly surprised with their fans, then ended up talking with other BYU fans on the way out and they had the opposite experience in their sections. Sigh. C'mon ASU, do better
