My thoughts on the ASU game my daughter and I attended...
1. We drove to Tempe from Prescott. Like many other BYU fans in Arizona that do not live in the Phoenix metropolitan area we were glad to be able to attend a game with our Cougars. Many other BYU fans from Prescott drove to the game.
2. The game experience was great even though we lost. Watching BYU come back from 21-3 was exciting. Most of the BYU fans who came to the game stayed until the last interception. The BYU crowd was 1/4 to 1/3 of the stadium and loud at the beginning and the second half.
3. ASU fans aside from a few hecklers were OK. The worst we heard was, "why aren't you guys in church?" from some guy high up in one of the parking garages on the way to the stadium. After the game we stopped for a hamburger on the way out of Phoenix and met an ASU fan also coming home from the game. We both smiled and talked about how great the game was and he complimented the way BYU came back at the end and number of fans we had at the game.
4. I attended an ASU game when they were in the PAC 12. At that time they looked down on BYU as an inferior opponent from a second rate conference. Yesterday they were definitely unsure at the end of the game if they could hold on to the win. You could see that the team was respected even though we were so far down in the first half.
5. Really proud of the way the team came back in the second half. Disappointed by the failed long pass that opened the game, the 4th down attempt midfield, the botched onside kick, the turnovers, the missed opportunities to score. The team just didn't seem to have the drive to win during the first half, but they ended up making the second half an exciting finish.
6. Never thought we'd be 9-2. Never thought we'd be a possible contender for the CCG. It's been a great year. All the trash talk on Cougar board about not being National Champs, seeded in the CFB playoffs, Big 12 championship, etc. It's understandable, but after watching BYU football since the 1980's it's just great to see how far we've come. Finally in a P4 conference, the excitement of going 9-0, the national attention. It's been a good year, better than expected.
