Some thoughts on the actual football game on Saturday
First off, congrats on the win. It was a good performance by BYU, and you guys are having quite the special season at the moment.

I thought Utah’s defense performed very well. ARod knew some of the holes in that defense and game planned reasonably well for some of those middle distance passes that ended up being wide open. But other than that, the defense made BYU earn everything.

The special teams edge obviously went to BYU. Your field-goal kicker looks like a stud. That kickoff return was such a big point in the game. It ended up being the difference in the game.

Utah had a couple of weeks to try to patch some holes in their offense and give Rose a little bit more practice time. I thought he did admirably well in the first half on those scripted plays. But once the game became more free-flow and adjustments were made, he showed his inexperience and the offense showed all its warts that we’ve seen the last five weeks. Bernard was a stud as usual. The Kuithe injury was sad. Credit to BYU for making those adjustments and shutting Utah down. You aren’t going to win a lot of games when you can’t score for a whole half.

As far as BYU’s defense, your CB who covered Singer (#2) did a really good job. Singer is a tough cover and he had to work for everything. Taggart covers a lot of ground. it seems to be more of a team defense effort vs any dominant players.

Your clock management was pretty atrocious. You got lucky a couple times with those fumbles going right to BYU players and somehow none of those tipped passes at the line found the hands of a defender. The two turnovers were gifts from Utah with inexplicable pass by Rose and a trick play that fooled absolutely no one in the building. But special seasons require things to go your way, so there’s no shame in that and it’s not sour grapes. Just pointing them out as big factors in the game. Utah got lucky with some dropped passes and a bad facemask call where the wrong ref overruled the right one. But that luck wasn’t enough.

The late hits were both good calls but neither were dirty. No targeting fouls. I thought the defensive holding at the end was a soft call, but not egregious. I can see how Ute fans would be angry and how BYU fans would say it was a good call.

Harlan was embarrassing.

Anyway, congrats again. Utah is going to go through some transitions and changes here going forward. BYU is in the drivers seat to make the playoff. I think you’ll be an underdog for any playoff game, but if you can get that bye and home field, anything can happen.

It was definitely a memorable chapter for the history of the rivalry.
