If the Cougars were to make the playoff, how would that stack up to the old BCS
bowl system in everyone's view? Would it be comparable or better than BSU's, Utah's, TCU's, or even UCONN's BCS bowl game appearances and wins?

I know we often joke about Utah's Rose Bowl appearances and losses, but would we feel the same if BYU had made the Rose Bowls? Would we feel proud of that fact? I think considering that Utah is still a neophyte to the big boy club, those two losses are major feathers in the cap of the program and fans because it is not an expectation. For Michigan and Ohio State, a Rose Bowl berth (and win) was the expectation for decades, so a loss was not only a major disappointment, but a point of shame.

Making the playoff seems to be more special than making the Field of 64, so it would stand to reason that we would all feel proud about it, and unlike a Rose Bowl loss, if we were to lose, I think it is likely still a feather in the cap we can feel proud about, so long as the university, the program, and the fans don't wrap their entire fanhood identity around the fact. Just be proud, and not asinine, I suppose. But that's cart before the horse stuff, just keep winning. Go Cougars!
