IMO, ESPN is just the media extension of the committee. The narratives are set
early in the season to limit blowback when they actually happen. Just look at last year. The media was all over FSU, saying they don't deserve to get in even while going undefeated, and then they didn't get in. The media is just there to try to warm people up to the idea.
Here's the narrative this year, "a two or even three loss SEC team deserves to get in over one loss ACC or B12 teams". If this scenario happens, the SEC team will be allowed in. BYU MUST win out or it won't get in the playoffs (even if going undefeated and losing in the B12 title game).
