The good:
Egor Demin: Still appears to be toying with the game. Does what he wants. Fun player to watch
Nice to see Fouss featured in the post late in the game. The coaching staff seemed to recognize his ability to get us good looks when we need points
We are long and athletic. That’s evident
The bad? How about collective brick laying, lack of continuity when Egor isn’t essentially delivering the O by himself, and sloppy play. Also, that was worse than a mediocre high school team at the free throw line
And that’s the good side of the ball.
Our D is terrible and won’t scare anyone. UC Riverside could drive and get good looks almost whenever they wanted. They hit contested shots in our face when we did guard. We are loose man on man and don’t seem to have al much of scheme on D. What we put on the floor tonight will get us killed in the Big 12.
We may very well get more than one unwanted tutorial of what it was like to be on the other end of things when BYU’s less talented, but hard nosed team, proficient within its schemes, beat teams last year.
On the other hand, a game like tonight should not be shocking. These guys have not played together. These coaches have not coached together. We are delusional if we thought there would be no visible growing pains.
Now that we’ve seen some major chinks in the armor, it’s all about what this team and staff do from here on out.
