But this BYU team has the ability to accomplish something big before we get into playoff time. And that is winning a P4 conference title. This program has won 23 conference championships in its history. But none of those banners carries much if any cache on the national level. As BYU fans we all know the rich history & tradition of this program. But it is time the rest of the country learns about it as well. And that begins by hanging a Big 12 Championship banner.
In his podcast this morning Joel Klatt lumped BYU in with Indiana in terms of brand strength, which most of us take as a massive insult. I believe his intention was to make the point that neither program is on the level of a Georgia, Ohio State, or Miami, which is a fair assessment, but it came across as BYU's football brand is on a similar tier as Indiana which is pure nonsense.
Obviously playoff success is going to vault a program's brand more than anything else in this new era of college football. And it would be ideal if BYU could become the football version of Gonzaga where they're winning playoff games every year. But the more attainable goal is to establish BYU as an elite brand in the Big 12. But that only happens by winning conference titles consistently. And that first opportunity is on the table right now.
CFP success would be awesome, but hanging that first Big 12 Championship banner is critical to start elevating the BYU brand.
