I saw a clip of Mark Knopfler discussing why he walked away from Dire Straits at the peak of their popularity. The interviewer questioned why he'd turn his back on that fame and notoriety. Mark answered with a question of his own (paraphrased):
"Can you tell me any good thing that comes with fame? Anything? I sure can't."
I found it fascinating that this creative genius viewed fame as an obstacle to loving life. It got in the way of his enjoyment of the little things, the simple things in life. He saw no value in it. So he walked away from the spotlight.
And yet, we all seem to crave recognition (e.g. varying degrees of fame within our own circle). We think we want fortune and fame, ignoring the obvious pitfalls that usually accompany both.
Sorry for rambling. It just caused me to think about my priorities and how I should manage them.
