I know we have an array of opinions on what BYU should do or how it does or should govern its strategy re: athletics, coaches, players, NIL, etc. No matter the opinion it should be clear we have very thoughtful, articulate, mission-first leaders who also (from first hand experience) I know their drive to win. I’m so grateful for how they frame our way forward with the purpose leading out over other passions we may have.

Elder Clark Gilbert previously provided great clarity about the BYU way of higher education, its purpose and athletics within that purpose. From my perspective, BYU is similar to most universities trying to find athletes that fit their program — with additional variables that matter to athlete and BYU alike. For many people, particularly those who seek to play for BYU, it’s not solely about the money, and when we claim it is we sell them short.

I fully believe BYU can navigate NIL in a novel way, offering its unique positioning and purpose, so well put by Jake Retzlaff, and consistently compete at high levels.
