I have the opportunity to move a 401k as I join a new employer. I recently learned you can move them to an IRA or into the new employer’s 401k. I know how the 401k to 401k transfer works and I don’t have any questions about that.
What are the benefits of rolling to an IRA? Most of my account is already a Roth 401k (probably 80%) but I suppose I could get the tax out of the way for the other 20% if I converted it to a Roth IRA? Other than that it seems like I’d just be going from Roth to Roth and maybe have more control over the fund?
For context my new employer uses Fidelity, if that makes any difference.
