Kalani and the benefits of loyalty
Ok, those of you who were calling for KS to be fired before the season have presumably been quieted (but we better not lose ANY games you think we "should" win or he needs to go--amiright?).

THIS season, THIS momentum, THIS is why you are SLOOOOW to fire somebody like Kalani, who loves BYU as much or more than any of you do, and has had some impressive seasons and wins at BYU (not all impressive, and some very much not, to be sure) — and you are moron if you want to do it after a single losing season and the first time in a number of years we didn't go to a bowl.

You can of course go hire another coach. Maybe they will be better, maybe they will be worse. But the way you wind up with someone who's going to stay, who will be loyal to you at the highest level-- is to let your guy-- the guy who is all in on BYU-- take his lumps, learn, and get better.

As I have pointed out (below), many or most great coaches take awhile to become really excellent. Saban, Sark, and Lane Kiffin are examples. And one of the most important and underrated aspects of winning in CFB is culture and consistency-- in systems, in approach, in recruiting strategies, etc.

Keeping a team together in this era of NIL and transfers and getting them playing as a team will be rewarded. And the example of that starts at the top with not being too hasty to make a change in the face of some adversity. Loyalty can be a genuine differentiator that translates to actual wins on the field. We are seeing it right now. It's the reason we keep crushing teams Vegas thinks should beat us. It's the intangible that is our best hope of competing in this new era.

So if you're on board the Kalani train now, welcome. If you're secretly still not, get on board. It will be a fun ride.
