If it were true, then why wasn't the net up in the South endzone? That's the student side. Wouldn't that be more important? And, even if the net were up on the South side it still doesn't make sense that they put the net on the North all the way up. Wouldn't 15 feet of net be enough to keep people from rushing the field? Putting it all the way up makes no sense.

I've seen a lot of football games... I don't think I've ever seen a situation where a school ruined the view of hundreds of their fans during an epic last minute come from behind win.
