Jake Retzlaff appreciation post. I was skeptical the first few weeks about his ability to keep our team competitive
because of the risks he was taking and the turnovers that were resulting for the risk he was taking.

He has proved me wrong and made me a believer! He is learning at an incredible pace.
1. He is reading the defense so much better it seems week to week. Both his pre snap reads and his in play reads are improving. He is checking into certain plays when he sees an advantage in the defense alignment and he is learning when he can press the ball forward and when he can't as the play develops. Kudos to the offensive staff for not only helping him see where and how to improve but for using motion, hard counts etc to help him read the defense pre snap and for helping him learn to see and check into certain things.
2. He's got wheels. He isn't a Taysom or Jaren freak athlete type but he is a decent athlete and he moves really well. He's fast enough to break a run to the second level and strong enough to finish leaning forward. He also has really really good pocket presence and knows when to step up or scoot out of the pocket. This is also improving game to game.
3. The kid has moxy! He reminds me of a little less vocal Max Hall. Gunslinger type QB, extremely competitive, willing to do just about whatever it takes even if it means he will have a few turnovers, and extremely confident. I like him a lot right now and it grows a little more each week.

All of this AND he is great representative of what BYU is and what BYU stands for. We couldn't ask for much more than a baller who is everything BYU. Hoping this kid keeps tearing it up and leads us to something special. I'm for sure on the Jake Retzlaff train.
