Just got back from Big Cedar Lodge.

A little bit of everything across their 5 courses. Pristine fairways, rough and greens. Felt as close to PGA tournament conditions as any place I have played that is open to the public.

Most Scenic

  • Top of the Rock - Only a 9 hole par 3, but with the views of the lake and mix of hole designs I can see why some compare it to August in terms of beauty and difficulty
  • Buffalo Ridge - Beautiful layout with great water falls, bridges, natural rock formations, and yes some Buffalo (Bison). We were first off the tee and the fog really added to the experience. First cours we played and a great way to start the week.
  • Payne's Valley - Open and expansive with great views across the valley from tee box to green. Set up against the rock it also offers some unique views you can't get most places. Of course the 19th hole nestled up against the rock has become an iconic par 3 bonus hole in the golf world
  • Ozark National - It has some great hole layouts from a visual perspective, but it is definitely geared toward a more challenging experience
  • Mountain Top - Other than views of the surrounding valleys this course for me was pretty meh. It was nice to walk some holes after carting most of the week

Difficulty

  • Ozark National - This course is definitely the most challenging. Blind shots, challenging bunker placements and unforgiving areas around the greens. Speaking of greens.....super fast and not forgiving at all. Birdie/Par putts easily translate to a 3 putt or worse.
  • Payne's Valley - List this number 2 based mostly on length for me. As mentioned above, the fairways are wide and the rough is reasonable (nice to have it all consistently one length for me. Always knew what I should expect)
  • Buffalo Ridge - This course just fit my ability and my favorite clubs the best. Hit a lot of Driver, Hybrid, Approach Irons.
  • Top of the Rock - If you have good distance control with your irons and wedges this is more fun than difficult. The long par 3s were the most challenging based on pin placements in relations to water and bunkers.
  • Mountain Top - pretty pedestrian 13 hole par 3 walking course. Not sure I would play it again.

My Favorite

  • Payne's Valley. It was really playable despite the length. We played the Tiger Tees (tips) on the 18th. When we played it was 558 yards uphill. Bogeyed and felt really good about it.
  • Close second was Buffalo Ridge based on how well the layout fit my game.

Highly recommend going if you haven't been there for your next golf outing. Some say it is notch below Bandon, but considering how great Bandon is that is a real compliment.
