I want to show a real example of this right now for the current climate to illustrate it.

I'll use St. George, given that's my region. Making $150k/year salary would be really rough to afford this home:

https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/3771-S-McKenzie-Ln_Washington_UT_84780_M97205-22524

If you bought this middle class home (3,000 sq ft, no pool, 0.32 acre) for $1.05M, with 20% down that costs you $210,000 and your home payment with P&I is about $5,600/month. That's $67k/year. Pre-tax money that takes about $90k salary to pay for this home.

Now let's say you don't have employer provided health insurance. A plan with 3 kids with a $15k deductible in the marketplace is $1,000/month (almost all non-tax deductible because it's not greater than 7.5% of income).

Paying $12k for health premium is $16k of pre tax money.

So just for this home & health insurance that's $106k of income.

That would leaves someone about $2,500/month net of taxes to pay for everything else (food, recreation, cars, health costs, travel, child expenses, etc).

Point is, it's really rough out there right now if you don't already own a home.
