Some is common sense. Some comments may surprise.
Yankee strengths-
Power hitting-Judge/Soto are the best. Judge is at 57 homers and batting .324 Soto has 40 homers and bats around.288. What teams wouldn’t want those 2 guys? Stanton can still slam one, but is wildly inconsistent.
Other hitting- Torres has been fairly hot the last month(after a dismal start of the season),so he should be a threat. No one else really stands out as a terrific hitter other than Judge/Soto. Some guys that have speed and can steal if they can get on= Volpe, Jazz Chisholm, Jasson Dominguez, Torres and surprisingly Aaron Judge.
Pitching- Might be the Yankees Achilles heal. It was very good early in the year and then fell apart. Forrest Gump’s line comes to mind. “You never know what you’re going to get.” Cole, the Yankee ace, has been up and down since an early season injury. Carlos Rodon= great one game, bad the next. Schmidt= serviceable, but average IMO. Cortes=recently injured. Status is up in the air. Gil=was great early. Needs to regain his early season form. Stroman=has had a bad season.
Relief pitching- Mid inning relief can be pretty good, but there is no true closer. Clay Holmes, the closer for most of the season, was demoted. It seems to be a closer by committee situation.
Baltimore has an 8-4 record against the Yanks, and if they win tonight they’ll sweep a 3 game series at Yankee Stadium. If the Yankees hang on to win the division, they’ll most likely face Baltimore in the postseason, which doesn’t bode well.
IMO, if the Yankees are to have post season success someone is going to have to step up big time unexpectedly. Guys like Rizzo, Volpe, Verdugo, Stanton, Dominguez or Wells.
If the Yankees get up early on a team they are tough to beat. They haven’t been much of a come from behind team this year.
