Looking at the AP Poll...
5 of the top 6 schools are from the SEC.

1--TEXAS. 4-0. They have crushed everyone they've played including a 52-0 beatdown of Colorado State and an impressive 31-12 win against Michigan.

2--GEORGIA. 3-0. They've got an impressive 34-3 win against Clemson, but nearly lost to Kentucky (12-12 win).

3--OHIO ST. 3-0. Crushed the 3 nobodies they've played.

4--ALABAMA. 4-0. Crushed Western Kentucky 63-0, USF 42-16, and Wisconsin 42-10.

5--TENNESSEE. 4-0. Killed 3 nobodies. Beak Oklahoma 25-15 on the road.

6--OLE MISS. 4-0. Haven't played anyone of note yet, but they've outscored their 4 opponents 220-22.

I'm not saying these teams don't deserve their rankings. But how do we really know how good any of them are at this point in the season? IMHO Texas clearly has the best early resume of these teams. But because these teams are all in the SEC (with the exception of Ohio St in the B1G) they all get a huge advantage by getting gifted with high pre-season rankings. And because the perception is that all SEC and B1G teams are great then a conference loss doesn't hurt them nearly as much as a conference loss by a B12 or ACC team.

In the current poll that came out today the SEC has 9 teams in the top 25, B1G has 6, B12 has 5 (#10 and 4 other teams bunched together between 18 and 23), and the ACC has 3. Independent Notre Dame and Boise State are the other 2 teams in the top 25.

The deck is clearly stacked in favor of the SEC (and to a lesser extent to the B1G) before the season even starts. Like I said before, who knows how good these teams really are and whether they deserve their rankings or not at this point. The problem is the advantage of pre-season polls and pundits' perceptions of the SEC and B1G, which seems to color everything in their favor.

If the playoffs started today the SEC would probably get 5 teams in, the B1G 4, the ACC 1, the B12 1, and the non-Big 4 1. And a lot of that stems from where teams were slotted before the season began.

I guess the 12-team playoff is better than the 4-team joke because at least everyone has a little bit of a chance, but it's still tilted way in favor of the B2.
