Did BYU make their own luck?
What an amazing game last night.

I was at the Miami game (7th row, south endzone. What a game! #1 all time, IMO including last night).

I was at the BYU Texas A&M game to start the 1996 season.

I was at the 1985 BYU/Air Force game where Air Force came into the game ranked #4 in the country with a shot at the national title (BYU of course the reigning national champion that year). BYU struggled most of the game but finally turned it around at the end to eke out the win. Air Force finished the year ranked #5/8 with a win over Texas. You don't hear about that game, but it was one of the biggest, most electric games I ever saw at cougar stadium. (Star receiver Glen Koslowski was hurt and missed the game and Bosco wore his jersey that game. At half, Koz went to Bosco on the sidelines with BYU down 21-7 and told him to quit disgracing his uniform. BYU turned it around in the second half, tying in the 3rd and getting the winning score in the 4th)

I was at the Utah/BYU game in Salt Lake that BYU won when Utah doinked the would-be winning field goal off the upright directly in front of me.

And that doesn't count the 95%+ BYU games I've seen in person or on TV since the first game I remember (BYU/SMU aka the Miracle Bowl) watching.

I've seen a lot of big BYU games.

I wasn't there in person last night (so I can't compare atmosphere), but I put that game in the top 5 for me. I'm guessing if I'd been in person, I would put it at #2, but that's just my guess. Night games at BYU are magic, especially the big ones. (Miami was a night game.)

I've read the Des News, Kansas State papers, ESPN. Consensus seems to be that BYU got really lucky and then made the most of that luck. I mean, BYU scored 31 points in 6 minutes last night? Did I get that right? That requires at least some luck. (I don't know that I've ever seen a sequence like that for BYU, or probably any other team, before.).

Despite that, my thought is that sometimes you make your own luck.

It is unlikely that BYU will match that scoring spree this season, and maybe for longer. But was it just gifted to them?

The defense has been surprisingly good. SMU is the best team they have faced, but SMU just stomped Tulane and normally scores 50 points at home. Not against BYU.

KState moved the ball well and they are clearly a talented team. But they couldn't put it in against BYU any better than SMU did. (Which was funny after watching the pregame analysis someone posted on here where it was expected by the analysts that KState would not struggle to finish drives like SMU did against BYU.)

Time will tell, but I think BYU's defense might be decent. And given their performance 1/3 of the way through the season, they might be tough to get touchdowns on. And sometimes that kind of thing can lead to making turnovers.

My feeling is that BYU definitely got lucky, and they can't rely on 31 points in 6 minutes to win future games, but maybe they made at least some of their own luck and actually deserve credit for a strong defensive performance and winning the game.

The big question to me now is what to expect going forward. A win at Baylor would be a nice statement. A game they should win on the road. It's a game they have tended to lose in recent years. That might be the most informative game so far this season about the true nature of this team.

Regardless, I enjoyed last night more than any game in recent memory (except maybe the last BYU/Utah game.)

Go Cougs!
