Potential Future Scenario(s) for BYU Football Coach(es)

With all the chatter about Moore and/or whoever else could be sought after to be the next coach I'm going to lay out my own speculative scenarios that I see as being much more likely over any chances of luring in a guy like Kellen Moore.

----------------------------------------

Scenario A:
BYU successfully hits its goal of 6 wins this year to be bowl eligible, but just barely. Not only in wins, but in score differentials in those wins. It's largely a vastly improved and aggressive defense that remains the team's sole flagship this year and thus we see a lot more games like the SMU game where the defense shines and the offensive just does just enough to get a few more points and pull off a close victory. And maybe most of those points will largely be credited to short fields being gifted to the offense by turnovers created by the defense. Thus Kalani retains his position as HC for at least next year, and because of the overall improvement and results for the team over last season, he retains his full staff with full confidence that A-Rod and the offense will see improvement to match the defense for next season.

However, next year Kalani and the team struggle to get another 6-7 wins status again. The defense shines through again but A-Rod, Jake and co have another mediocre year with the offense. More pressure mounts for Kalani to let go of A-Rod. Rather than going through the heartache of being the one to let A-Rod go after already going through that with his good buddy Tuiaki, Kalani instead lays aside his pride and competitive spirit and musters up the humility to do some deep and serious self introspection and realizes that he may have reached his ceiling with the program as is and that indeed, Jay Hill, having proven to be able to turn around and sustain a well-coordinated defense, would be the better man to lead the whole program. Kalani's love, passion, and fanhood of the program causes him to accept that the program could be better served by Jay Hill taking over the reigns of the whole thing and essentially resigns.

However, loyalty and respect for Kalani and his love for BYU football leads to many in the AD in collaboration with Jay Hill, etc, coming up with a role for Kalani to still serve in the AD and be a big part of the football program. Maybe that's in the realm of recruiting department or some other mentoring and supportive role.

With Jay Hill now at the helm, he becomes the one to let go of A-Rod and goes on to promote Fesi to be the OC given Fesi's tenure with the BYU program, relationship with existing players, and relives the same HC to OC relationship they had at Weber before Fesi was brought on board to BYU. BYU sees modest improvement in the offense under a new QB, perhaps Hillstead, with flashes of greatness by season's end as both Fesi and Hillstead grow in their new roles. Things really take off for the offense in their second year running the show together, now 2027 with Hillstead as a senior.  A couple high end talented prospects have joined the program to develop as underclassmen and once is poised to keep the ball rolling the next year as the new starter and the recruiting pipeline is full and flowing.  A bit of a win-win situation for all (except for Roderick, who'd still be good enough to land on his feet in the same or a related postion and opportunity elsewhere, albeit maybe a lower level school, where he could try to reclimb the ladder from there). Obviously an OC change would likely lead to some shuffling on the offensive staff, likely much more so if an outsider was brought in.  All the position coaches that weren't retained would still land on their feet with good opportunities to grown and progress elsewhere too though.

--------------------------------------------------

Scenario B:
BYU's combination in both lack of depth at RB (Martin and Ropati never really return to full health until late in the season) and lack of skill and talent at QB positions this year alongside more inept play calling (think taking snaps from shotgun rather than QB sneaks on 3rd/4th down and inches) comes home to roost in conference play and BYU fails to reach its goal of 6+ wins and get to bowl game.  Instead, like last year, BYU, after a strong start, only gets to 5 wins, but unlike last year, instead of losing in a handful of blow-outs along the way, they manage to keep each loss close and by no more than 10 points. So year over year, the team does appear to have improved over the previous year, but it's only the defense under Jay Hill that enabled such improvement. Thus the pressure becomes too much for Kalani to retain A-Rod, and reluctantly, he let's A-Rod go and seeks to bring on a new OC.  One they are confident can revamp the offense with a similar turnaround as the defense has see thus far under Jay Hill. Maybe that's Fesi due to his tenure here, his existing relationships with other coaches and players, and his experience as OC at Weber.  However, maybe he'd already be that guy now if they felt he could be that guy.  So maybe it ends up being someone from the outside.  Maybe a Darrel Bevell, though unlikely to be him exactly.

And then, perhaps Kalani finally has a really special season as a P4 team just in time to see 5 year contract renewal offered to him. At that point, Jay Hill is poached for the head job elsewhere at another P4 school or a DC job at a place like Michigan, Bama, USC, Georgia, etc...if he hasn't already taken up a bigger job elsewhere with a big G5 brand (Boise?) or lower level P4 program, knowing that there won't be many more opportunities that will give him the time to build up a whole program himself at the P4 level as he too advances in age.

--------------------------------------------------

Scenario C:
Like Scenario B, the team fails to reach 6 wins, and all the losses are really close thanks to the defense as already stated above.  But rather than keeping Kalani on board with lots of pressure to essentially fire A-Rod, the admin decides the team really does need better direction from the top down and they go ahead and buy out the final 3 years of Kalani's contract and then immediatly promote Jay Hill as HC at the conclusion of the season.  A la Gary Crowton to Bronco Mendenhall.

----------------------------------------

My speculative guessing would put each of these scenarios as having an equal 33.3 percent chance of happening. Oh...and somewhere in any of those scenarios, Tom Holmoe announces his pending retirement.  A new AD in waiting is named.  Perhaps Santiago.  Perhaps Darger.  They too will have a big hand in any of those scenarios playing out.

A scenario I can't see happening at all is a Kellen Moore being brought in to immediately be HC with no prior relationships to the school, outside being married to a BYU alum much like Kevin Young.  Yes, I'm bringing up basketball now because as many on this board have seen by now, a lot of comparisons have been made here and elsewhere between KY and the potential for Kellen Moore to follow a similar track for football. And yet, it must be noted that KY still hasn't coached a game, let alone a full season.

However, at least for KY, there already existed a relationship with Holmoe, Santiago, Smith, etc from back when he was intereviewed ahead of Pope being announced as the new basketball HC 5 or so years ago.  Can the same be said of Moore?  If anything, another guy who interviewed prior to Kalani being named football's HC would be Ken Niamatalolo.  But maybe he's more akin to a Mark Madsen than a Kevin Young in this scenario. I believe Madsen had also been among the pool of candidates to interview for the job Pope acquired.

And even if Moore had been interviewed or otherwise had an established relationship with BYU brass, is there enough donor and department money out there to stretch beyond basketball to not only appeal to him but to also help him lure in a mixed staff of guys with pro level coaching and development and guys in the college ranks who are proven recruiters and developers? For that is what has happened for Kevin Young. And then would there be enough money left over to pay fair rate in NIL to attract the talent equal to the coaching staff as has been happening for KY and his basketballs staff?  For that is what's been happening for Kevin Young now as well.

Another difference between Football and Basketball and the comparisons between KY and the potential Kellen Moore would have for football is that with the basketball team, it was Pope who had such success that his blue blood dream school and alma mater ultimately came calling and he had no hesitation to take that job. With Kalani, it'd be BYU leaving him behind in any move to get a new head coach.

So no, it would not be Kellen Moore that would be getting the call and bags of money thrown at him to be the next HC for BYU Football. It's much more likely to be Jay Hill, already establishing himself to be a good coordinator and good recruiter at the P4 level. Well...it remains to be seen how much the defense has improved against long established P4 programs. That'll happen through the conference games coming up soon.

Regardless if any or none of the above scenarios happen, change for the better will happen sooner or later...

GO COUGS!!!
