The second sentence could not be more wrong. The 2021 Bohanon Baylor team rushed for over 3,000 yards. The leading rusher had 1600 yards and the second leading rusher had 800 yards. BYU has never been in the same zip code of a 3,000 yard rushing season. BYU has rarely been in the same zip code of a 3,000 yard rushing season. Baylor's dominate running game allowed Bohanon to be a game manager and make a lot of easy throws. His PER during that season was a very respectable 147.

At the end of Baylor's championship season, Bohanon was benched, because he was NOT a great passer. Bohanon then transferred to USF. In 2022, after having a full season worth of live snaps the previous year, Bohanon was NOT good. His PER for the 7 games he played was 118.

When Bohanon hit the portal this year, BYU was his best offer. BYU offered Bohanon after missing on multiple other QBs. During fall practice, Retzlaff outplayed Bohanon. The reports from camp indicate that Bohanon threw more picks that Retzlaff. These reports and Bohanon's USF interceptions defeats the claim that Bohanon takes "much better care of the ball".

I know we fans are desperate for a QB savior, but I don't see any on the 2024 horizon. I don't believe a single QB on the roster is capable, this year, of a 145+ PER season. Jake played very poorly in the SMU game (112 PER), but his SIU game showed potential for a higher ceiling than Bohanon's history would suggest. My hope/expectation is that through patient development Retzlaff can achieve a 2024 season average PER in the 130s.

I believe Retzlaff can and will improve, but if he is benched in favor of Bohanon don't expect a 9 win season from a guy who only managed a 118 PER without a dominant run game.
