Kalani’s credibility or lack of it is piling up
I’m as pro BYU as anyone, or more, and I want Kalani to succeed too. I know many here don’t want to see the facts, but we have a problem at the top.

Kalani:

-“We have great depth at RB.” In an era of the transfer portal and NIL, there is no excuse for going into this year with our top two RBs coming off injury, and the next RBs yet to prove effective. We haven’t started B12 play and we are already in trouble with depth. Dumb!

—“We have 2 great QBs.” “The competition was down to the wire.” “JR knows he has to protect the ball.” Blah, blah, blah. Either this talk was all just smoke, or now that the whole world sees they were wrong, their pride will not let them admit it and make a change. Or maybe Bohanan is not nearly as good as we were lead to believe.

—It’s not all bad this year. JHill is awesome and has surrounded the defense with a dream team of asst coaches, GAs, analysts etc. Of course if we’re being honest about it, Kalani was practically dragged kicking and screaming into making a change and hiring Hill and firing Tuiaki. It was only after he lost the locker room and the big shots got restless that Tuiaki was let go.

—And this year so far we have faired much better with injuries and the players all effusively credit the current strength & c., nutritionists, etc. for their bodies and preparation. But it’s hard to pat Kalani on the back here and credit his insight. Why? Do you remember Kalani saying hands off Tafisi, the former strength and conditioning director, despite a multiple year problem where we year after year sustained a disproportionate share of injuries. Kalani refused to make a change there too until the numbers forced his hand.

There are more, but these are recent examples that make the point. Everybody wants Kalani to succeed. I know I do and had hoped he would grow into the job. But this year’s lack of foresight at two crucial positions, QB and RB, just confirms to me KS is not a program leader. I think he is great in the locker room. He’s a good man and a good cheerleader for BYU. But he lacks vision and organization.

So frustrating. We finally get the defense set. We go out and revamp the OL so we can run efficiently and get play action going, and we decide to neglect getting prepared and organized with the two most important positions, QB and RB. Just frustrating as can be!
