BYU freshman forward Kanon Catchings has entered the transfer portal.

A 4-star player in the 2024 recruiting class, Catchings came to BYU last June after decommitting from Purdue. Catchings had a first round grade from some draft pundits, but never found a consistent role at BYU despite showing flashes. Catchings started 15 games for BYU, but eventually lost his starting role and saw his role diminish. For the season, Catchings averaged 7.3 points in 35.5% shooting from three.

His best performance of the season came in a home win versus Baylor, where he had 23 points and was a perfect 8-8 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line.

Catchings is a talented player with the ability to make tough shots over defenders with his size. Kevin Young eventually favored more veteran guys like Mawot Mag, Dawson Baker, and Trey Stewart and had fewer mental lapses in games and were more assignment sound.

Catchings will certainly get looks from big schools in the portal. One potential school to eye could be North Carolina. The Tar Heels new GM is Jim Tanner, who was the long time agent of Kanon’s aunt Tamika Catchings and has a relationship with the family.
