Ok, we won't win because of a lack of depth, but our lack of depth doesn't hurt us in week one as much as it does later in the season when we usually play Utah. There is no question recruiting has taken a big hit post-Independence. Whether fault lies at the feet of coaches, non-P5 status, the Honor Code, lack of a conference, increased competition or all of the above, recruiting has been a problem. The allure of Playing at BYU means we usually have a pretty good group of quality starters and skill players, but suffer from a lack of quality backups. This begins to manifest itself only after the first few games of the season as injuries rack up and starters feel banged up and tired. It's why Independent BYU plays like world beaters in weeks one and two. Over the past 10 seasons, we are 16-4 in the first two games of the season. 12 of those wins came against P5 opponents. We've been playing Utah mostly later in the season where depth wins games. Even so, most of the losses have been close. Look for a decisive win next week.
